Unkept Yards & Pest Issues
Pests come in a wire range of sizes from the nearly microscopic ringworm to the hundred plus pound mountain lion. Thankfully, we don’t see many of the bigger pests often. So, what does this have to do with unkept yards? All pests need shelter and most operate on the DL so the more cover they have the more damage they can do. Here’s a closer look at pests and refuse.
Leaf Litter – From spring through Winter, leaf litter and organic waste from your yard not only helps pests to hide but may actually attract pests that you did not have before. If your yard is spotless and your neighbor is growing a jungle, you will likely get some overflow pest from their yard into your yard or home. Small insects hide in fallen leaves and rodents are likely to use large piles of leaf refuse as a nesting site.
Lumber – Old lumber or even new lumber that sits for a bit while you get ready for a project attracts pests. Rodents, spiders, snakes, and other pests will use lumber piles as a place to hide and hunt. Mice, for example, need a sturdy place to make a nest and raise young. Where you have mice you eventually have snakes.
Old Cars and Stored Trailers – These are a haven for mice, rats, and spiders. Even wasp will move into a vehicle if they have access to the interior. Squirrels will also make use of a trailer or old car. They will either dig out the seats for nesting material or make a nest in the vehicle.
Clean yards have fewer pests as there are fewer places for pests to hide. A snake in a pile of wood is not likely to become pray from a hawk or an owl. A mouse who lives in a car is not likely to be killed by a cat. To learn more about how to reduce pest issues, give our team a call.
